Frequently Asked Questions

What is OPEF?

OPEF is a 501(c)(3) organization that raises money to fund innovative curriculum, needed equipment and facility improvements, and creative programming that is not funded through the district’s core budget.

When and why was OPEF established?

In 2007, a small group of alumni planned a tribute to retiring Oconomowoc High School drama and speech teacher, Vic Passante. When more than 300 people contributed and the group raised $63,000, an idea was born. Through the leadership of Craig Schiefelbein and initial directors Maribeth Bush, Michael Herro, and Donna Scholl, OPEF was established as an independent, non-profit partner of the Oconomowoc Area School District.

How is OPEF funded?

OPEF is funded through the generosity of community support through direct donations and fundraising events.

How much of my donation actually goes to the schools/students?

Every dollar you donate goes directly to programs that seek OPEF funding. OPEF is staffed entirely by volunteers and thus has no human resources overhead. Additionally, OPEF is fortunate enough to have a modest endowment that covers its limited administrative costs (tax filings, insurance, etc.). (Donations to grow the endowment are always accepted and appreciated!)

How does OPEF award money?

OPEF provides funds through its granting process. Teachers and staff may apply for funding for specific projects or needs. After review by a committee and approval by the Board of Directors, funds are assigned based on several criteria including fund availability, number of students impacted, and alignment with OPEF’s and district goals and priorities.

How can I help OPEF?

Community support is vital to OPEF’s success. We welcome contributions of time or treasure. (All donations to OPEF are tax deductible.)

You can support OPEF and the students of Oconomowoc by making a donation of:

  • Equipment, supplies, or in-kind services
